Women By D.I. Jolly
“Do you ever wonder what it’d be like to be a woman?”
Johnny stopped mid-sip of coffee, put his mug down and turned his full attention to his friend.
“What?”
“Like if you spontaneously became a woman right now, what do you think you’d do?”
“Go lock myself in my room until you stopped asking me if you could play with my boobs.”
Josh looked down at Johnny’s chest and for a moment his imagination distracted him, but he managed to shake it off.
“No but seriously.”
“You’re going to have to be more specific. Do you mean like, makeup and tampons or do you mean what work would be like? Or is this a discrimination conversation? What aspect of this discussion has you thinking about it?”
Josh opened his mouth but closed it again as he looked around his mind trying to find the root of the idea and come up short.
“I… I don’t think I actually thought about it that hard, more of an idle thought about what it would be like, and before I had an answer myself I asked you.”
Johnny finally took a sip of his coffee and turned his attention back to the tv.
“Freak out.”
“What?”
“I think if I transformed into a woman, the first thing I would do is freak out. Because that sounds really terrifying. Not because I was suddenly a woman, but because the idea of spontaneously transforming into anything sounds really terrifying. After that, I don’t know, probably call my mom.”
“Oh good idea, get some perspective. Also, she did always want a daughter.”
They both nodded knowingly and relaxed back into the comfort of a complicated discussing, skilfully dodged.
